Concrete Slab and Driveway Removal in Melbourne

Concrete removal comes up constantly, and rarely as a job on its own. It is the old driveway that has to go before the new one is poured, the slab left behind after a shed or garage came down, a redundant hardstand on a commercial site, or the paving and paths around a house that are in the way of a knockdown rebuild.

It looks like the most predictable work on any site. It is also where quotes diverge more than people expect, and the reasons are consistent.

What is inside the slab decides the job

The visible surface tells you very little. What matters is thickness and reinforcement.

An unreinforced 100mm domestic path breaks up quickly and predictably. A 150mm driveway with heavy reinforcing mesh through it behaves very differently, because the mesh holds the broken pieces together and the slab has to be cut into manageable sections rather than simply broken and scooped.

Older commercial and industrial slabs are the harder end again. Thick sections, heavy reinforcement, and sometimes steel fibre through the mix. Those need bigger machines, more breaking time, and sometimes saw cutting to create working edges.

This is why a square metre rate given without anyone looking at the slab is close to meaningless. The same area of concrete can be a half-day job or a two-day job depending on what is in it.

Reinforcement changes disposal too

Reinforced concrete cannot simply go into a clean concrete stream. The steel has to be separated, which is done as the material is processed. That is not a problem, and it is worth knowing because it explains why reinforced slabs cost more to dispose of than plain ones.

Clean, separated concrete is one of the better recovery streams available from any demolition. It gets crushed and reused as aggregate and road base, which is why sorting on site rather than mixing everything into one bin is what keeps disposal costs sensible. Access and how material leaves

Concrete is heavy. That single fact drives most of the logistics.

A driveway at the front of the property with a truck able to stand at the kerb is the straightforward case. A rear slab down a narrow side path is not, because every tonne has to be moved to the front by a machine small enough to get down there, which means more passes and more time.

Where trucks cannot stand legally on the street, a permit may be required to occupy the road or footpath, and that has both a cost and a lead time. We cover the neighbour and council side of that in our piece on boundary walls, street trees and asset protection.

Melbourne's older inner suburbs supply the hard cases: laneway access only, no room for a truck, and a slab that has to come out past a house that must not be damaged. That is the same access problem we discuss for narrow block demolition, and it applies just as much to a slab as to a house.

What is underneath and around it

A few things routinely turn a simple slab removal into something more involved.

Services running under or through the slab need locating before breaking starts. Old sewer, stormwater, water and sometimes electrical runs are not always where the plans suggest, particularly on properties that have been extended over the years.

Slabs cast against or over footings, retaining walls or boundary structures need care, because those elements may be doing structural work or belong to a neighbour.

Then there is what the slab is sitting on. Where the fill underneath is poor or contaminated, that becomes a separate consideration and may need to be dealt with rather than left for the next trade.

Asbestos and contamination

Concrete itself is not the concern. What can be, on older sites, is what sits with it: bonded asbestos sheet used as formwork or packing, asbestos cement pipes in the ground below, or contaminated fill under an old industrial hardstand.

On any pre-1990 site this is worth establishing before work starts, for the same reasons set out in our article on asbestos assessment before demolition. Discovering it mid-job is far more disruptive and more expensive than allowing for it.

What moves the price

In rough order: thickness and reinforcement, access and haul distance, total volume, whether saw cutting is needed to create edges or to protect adjacent surfaces that are staying, disposal and whether the material is clean, and any services or structures that need working around.

Notably absent from that list is the square metre figure on its own, which is the number most people lead with.

What to ask for in a quote

Ask whether the price assumes a thickness and reinforcement, and what happens if the slab turns out to be heavier than assumed. That is the single most common variation on this work.

Ask whether disposal is included and whether it assumes clean concrete. Ask how the material is getting off the site and whether any permit is needed for trucks. Ask what happens to the surface underneath, meaning whether you are left with broken ground, or a levelled and compacted surface ready for the next stage.

That last point matters more than people expect, because a slab removal that leaves a rutted, uncompacted mess creates work for whoever pours next.

The short version

Price follows what is in the slab and how the material leaves the site, not the area. Get someone to establish thickness and reinforcement rather than assume. Locate services first. On older sites, check for asbestos and contamination before starting. And be clear about what condition the ground is left in, because that is what the next trade inherits.
